Marcello Federico directs the HLT-MT research unit at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento (Italy). He is also Adjunct Professor at the ICT Doctorate School of the University of Trento. As director of the HLT-MT unit, he oversees the work of about 15 researchers and Ph.D. students.
His research expertise is in statistical machine translation, spoken language translation, statistical language modelling, information retrieval, and speech recognition. In these areas, he has coauthored over 150 scientific papers, contributed in 20 international and national projects, and codeveloped widely used software packages for machine translation and language modelling. He has served in the program committees of all major international conferences in the field of human language technology.
He has been editor in chief and associate editor for refereed journals (ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing; Foundations and Trends in Information Retrieval), and is currently senior editor for the journal IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing. Finally, he was the general chair of the EAMT 2012 conference. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.
